Innovation and Technology Scholarship Award Presentation Ceremony 2023

In this ever-changing digital era with the tremendous Innovation and Technology (InnoTech) advancements, the Government’s Hong Kong Innovation and Technology Development Blueprint and various measures were launched to create a favourable environment conducive to the InnoTech development of local talents.

Jointly organised by the Innovation and Technology Commission (ITC), HSBC and The Hong Kong Federation of Youth Groups, the Innovation and Technology Scholarship (the Scholarship) encourages and nurtures outstanding students to contribute to the InnoTech industry. The Scholarship’s diversified elite training programmes are also designed to unleash the potential of the awardees within the vibrant InnoTech ecosystem, enabling Hong Kong to become an international I&T center.

At the Award Presentation Ceremony held at the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre today (June 13), the Chief Executive of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region, Mr John LEE, GBM, SBS, PDSM, PMSM, officiated at the ceremony and recognised the achievements of the 25 awardees.

The 25 awardees are from different universities and disciplines, including medicine, biological science, computer science and property management. Each awardee has demonstrated extraordinary creativity and enthusiasm towards InnoTech along with a strong professional background. They are turning challenges into opportunities and pursuing their InnoTech dreams with persistence.

The Hon John LEE, GBM, SBS, PDSM, PMSM, The Chief Executive of the HKSAR, remarked that, “Knowledge and innovation drives the future of our economy. To enhance Hong Kong’s competitiveness, the Hong Kong SAR Government has adopted a multi-pronged approach to expand our I&T talent pool.” He congratulated the 25 awardees again and encouraged them by adding that, “The potential of I&T development is limitless. Young people should seize the golden opportunities ahead, and contribute to the country and Hong Kong with their talents.”

 

Ms Luanne LIM, Chief Executive, Hong Kong, HSBC, said, “Innovation and talent are, and have always been, the drivers of Hong Kong’s continued success. All our recipients demonstrate exceptional potential in specific disciplines, ranging from science, information technology, engineering, medicine to cross-disciplinary technology.” Winning the Scholarship is just the start of their journey, and she looks forward to seeing what they will achieve in the future.

Mr Andy HO, Executive Director of The Hong Kong Federation of Youth Groups said, “We are so honoured that the ITC and HSBC have been our partners for the past 13 years in organizing the Innovation and Technology Scholarship, bringing together 325 outstanding undergraduates with the passion of their individual disciplines that they are willing to contribute to society. The Scholarship aims to develop local InnoTech talents’ international perspective through intellectual exchanges in a variety of areas, equipping them with future skills and knowledge to stand out in helping Hong Kong develop into a truly InnoTech hub.”

 

The Hon Bernard CHAN, GBM, GBS, JP, Chairman of the Scholarship’s Awardee Selection Committee said, “Over the past few years serving on the selection committee for the Innovation and Technology Scholarship, I’ve seen students evolve from focusing on research and science in the earlier years to now applying innovation and technology at a social level. Students’ sharing has been immensely valuable; we’re amazed by their receptiveness to technologies and innovative solutions given the endless potential of innovation. My heartfelt thanks to ITC, HSBC, and The Hong Kong Federation of Youth Groups for running the Innovation and Technology Scholarship. I hope students can continue benefiting from the scheme.”

 

The Scholarship selects 25 outstanding undergraduates every year. Each awardee will receive up to $150,000 for participation in various elite-training programmes. Since its establishment, 325 outstanding awardees have been recognised. With the support of the scholarship, awardees can participate in exchange programmes in renowned overseas/ Mainland universities, and undertake internships in local InnoTech companies to gain the first-hand knowledge of the industry. They will also receive valuable guidance from designated mentors who are outstanding in their industries through the Mentorship Programme under the Scholarship. Awardees will also continue to influence younger generations and promote InnoTech through community service and activities.
