Innovation and Technology Scholarship 2025 Award Presentation Ceremony
Empowering 25 future leaders to drive social change
Contributing their interdisciplinary ideas for a sustainable future
Since 2011, the Innovation and Technology Commission (ITC), HSBC and The Hong Kong Federation of Youth Groups (HKFYG) have jointly launched the Innovation and Technology Scholarship, injecting new impetus into local innovation and technology (I&T) development by nurturing undergraduates with a passion for technological innovation. Over the years, the Scholarship has cultivated 375 young individuals with global perspectives through a series of elite-nurturing initiatives, enhancing their experiences and skills while exploring I&T potential across disciplines. In the wake of the global I&T wave and in alignment with the government policy of “promoting integrated development of education, technology and talents”, the Scholarship supports Hong Kong’s development as an international I&T centre by empowering the next generation of innovative leaders to harness the city’s scientific research capabilities and unique competitive advantages.
The Innovation and Technology Scholarship 2025 Award Presentation Ceremony was held at the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre today (June 26). Professor the Hon SUN Dong, JP, the Secretary for Innovation, Technology and Industry of the HKSAR Government, officiated at the ceremony and presented certificates to 25 outstanding undergraduates, recognising their I&T passion and achievements. Coming from HKU, CUHK, PolyU, HKUST, CityU and HKBU, this year’s awardees represent a wide array of academic disciplines, including Medicine, Engineering, Global Business and Finance, Fashion, Psychology, English and Applied Linguistics, demonstrating a wealth of I&T talents in Hong Kong.
Professor the Hon SUN Dong, JP, the Secretary for Innovation, Technology and Industry of the HKSAR Government, said, Hong Kong enjoys a unique advantage of having strong support from the motherland and close connection with the world, converging global innovation resources, including high-calibre talent. He encouraged students to keep up curiosity for innovation and explore interested I&T fields, cherish the opportunities brought along by the programmes under the Scholarship, seize every chance to learn from mentors and grow not only as innovators but also as responsible contributors to society.
Ms Charlotte WONG, Chief Information Officer, Hong Kong, HSBC, said, “It is truly inspiring to celebrate the achievements of these 25 exceptional Scholars during a landmark year for both the Scholarship and HSBC, as we celebrate the 15th and 160th anniversaries, respectively. These milestones underscore the profound impact of innovation and technology—not only in shaping industries but also in paving the way for brighter, more equitable futures. Today’s Scholars embody the power of bold ideas and creativity to transform communities and inspire generations to come. I am excited to see not only what they will achieve in the future but also who they will inspire along the way.”
Ms HSU Siu-man, Executive Director, The Hong Kong Federation of Youth Groups, said, “Over the years, the Innovation and Technology Scholarship has recognised the dreams of young innovators and tech pioneers as they seek solutions to social challenges and apply their innovations for social good. This year’s awardees represent the very best minds who will drive social change through their passion and creativity. I am truly impressed by the brilliance of their ideas, and look forward to seeing their dreams come to life.”
The Hon Bernard CHAN, GBM, GBS, JP, Chairman, the Innovation and Technology Scholarship’s Awardee Selection Committee, said, “With the graduation of 375 students from the Scholarship, we all recognise the importance of innovation and technology since everything we do has to do with I&T. The issue we are now dealing with is how to use I&T for social problem solving across disciplines in order to improve the lives of others. I hope that the Scholarship can continue to inspire more future leaders of Hong Kong.”
Every year, 25 outstanding local undergraduates are selected to receive a Scholarship of up to HKD150,000 each. The Scholarship supports their participation in a series of elite-nurturing initiatives, encompassing overseas/Mainland attachments, local internships, mentorship programmes and service projects. By immersing themselves in a unique learning journey, awardees gain cutting-edge I&T knowledge and experience from around the world and are poised to lead I&T integration across sectors upon their return, contributing their expertise and enthusiasm to the I&T future of Hong Kong.
To help young I&T talent capitalise on the latest opportunities, this year’s Scholarship continues to focus on six “I&T Areas”, comprising “Advanced Manufacturing and Advanced Engineering”, “Artificial Intelligence and Robotics”, “Business and Financial Technology”, “Life and Health Technology”, “Sustainability and Green Technology”, and “Multidisciplinary Technology and Others”. The Scholarship aims to encourage the next generation of young pioneers to break through academic boundaries and acquire diverse knowledge and skills to stand out in the rapidly changing global I&T landscape. At the same time, it enables them to realise their aspirations, making active contributions to society and leading future social transformations with research and applications.
